To hard-line critics of Burma's new civilian government, Hillary Clinton's visit to the former pariah state last week was fraught with potential dangers _ the most obvious, a misguided US endorsement of a state it once described as an ''outpost of tyranny''. But that was then _ after the junta's crackdown on the 1988 pro-democracy uprising _ and this is now, with a new Burmese leadership facing up pragmatically to the realities of change.
